2019-07-10 · Zinc blend and wurtzite are the two major polymorphic structures of zinc sulfide. Since zinc blend is more thermodynamically stable than wurtzite, the wurtzite form tends to convert into zinc blend slowly. The key difference between zinc blende and wurtzite is that zinc blend is cubic, whereas wurtzite has a hexagonal structure. Reference:

Since the volume per atom is the same, a given volume of reciprocal space for wurtzite contains approximately twice as many reciprocal lattice points. Wurtzite

Wurtzite zinc oxide (ZnO) is a remarkable multifunctional material with a distinctive property set and a huge range of existing and emerging applications (Look 2006).In particular, it is a direct wide bandgap semiconductor (E g ∼3.4 eV) with intrinsically high transparency over the whole visible range (Fig. 1) and a resistivity that can be tuned from semi-insulating right through to Wurtzite ZnO has polar surfaces, such as (0001) and (000-1), and non-polar surfaces such as {01-10} and {2-1-10}. Three different growth stages were defined during the nanowire growth: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end [33].At different growth stages, the axial growth at polar surfaces is found to have a different relative growth rate to the lateral growth at non-polar surfaces. Wurtzite Group. Usually found as black to dark reddish-brown massive resinous to sub-metallic material, also as botryoidal banded crusts, and more rarely as hemimorphic pyramidal, or tabular, crystals.

An ornamental stone known as Schalenblende (an intergrowth of Wurtzite, Sphalerite, and often Galena) is usually referenced with Wurtzite but is more often listed as a variety of Sphalerite.
